vuxu.org: Fand

Fand is a 433Mhz graphite PowerMac G4 running OpenBSD.

The naming

Fand is an early Irish sea goddess, later described as a “Queen of the Fairies”. Her name is variously translated as “Pearl of Beauty” or “A Tear”. She is seen as the most beautiful of goddesses, associated with the Other World islands of pleasure, youth and women.

Unfixed Issues

  • The machine can only wake-on-lan when it is sleeping.

Setup

  • I couldn’t get netbooting to work, so I created a small HFS+ partition with the OS X Installation DVD and put ofwboot and bsd.rd there.

    • This is not as easy as it sounds: There is no obvious way to fetch data from the net using that DVD. Hint: Use mount_nfs and you’ll need to pass -o resvport.

    • The 4.7 ofwboot did not load bsd.rd from HFS+ for me. I went back and used the 4.0(!) one which worked immediately.

  • After booting bsd.rd, you can flatten the disk; I used a MBR partitioning scheme. Be sure to have a small FAT partition at the beginning to put ofwboot into.
